eBay Promoted Listings Changes: Rebuild Your Attribution Review Before You Change Budget

When attribution rules change, reported advertising results can move even if shopper behavior does not. eBay sellers should rebuild their review process before reallocating spend.

eBay has announced changes to Promoted Listings that affect placement eligibility and attribution. The operational risk is familiar: when a platform changes how an order is credited, a seller may mistake a reporting change for an improvement in underlying demand.

Read eBay’s seller announcement.

Audit the baseline first

Export performance for a stable period before and after the change. Segment by product family, average selling price, margin and return rate. Then compare ad-attributed sales with total sales, not just one dashboard metric.

Budget decisions should follow evidence

  • Keep a record of campaign settings and the date each changed.
  • Separate new listings from established listings in reporting.
  • Check whether organic sales moved at the same time as attributed sales.
  • Use profit contribution, not revenue alone, as the escalation rule.

eBay’s current seller documentation is the source of truth for its rules. Your own account data is the source of truth for whether those rules produce a better commercial result for your inventory.
