Universal Commerce Protocol: Why Merchants Need a Product and Order Data Map

A commerce protocol only helps when a merchant's product, checkout and support data are internally coherent. Start with a map of the order lifecycle.

Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol as part of its work on agentic shopping. Protocol announcements can sound abstract, but they point to a concrete merchant need: systems must agree on product facts and order state if new shopping surfaces are to work reliably.

Build the data map before connecting anything new

Document the source of truth for product price, availability, shipping promise, tax, promotions, payment status, fulfillment status and returns. Identify where each value is created, updated and exposed to a customer-facing channel.

Use the map to find risk

Common failure points include inventory that updates too slowly, promotions that apply differently by channel and order changes that do not reach support systems. A small pilot with a narrow product set is safer than exposing an entire catalog while those differences are unresolved.

Agentic commerce is an integration challenge as much as a discovery opportunity. Strong operating data is the foundation.
